COVENTRY, RI  (July 13, 2022) – As part of its sponsorship of The Providence Journal Honor Roll Boy and Girl Awards,  The Finetco Family of Lumberyards Wednesday morning awarded Cranston West Graduate Madison Alves and Westerly High School Graduate Jacob Serra each with a $5,000 scholarship.

Dating back to 1927, the Honor Roll Awards each year has honored outstanding student-athletes based on both athletic performance and academic achievement. The Finetco Family of Lumberyards took over as the program sponsor in 2020, helping to revive this longtime tradition after a brief lapse in 2019.

“We are very happy and proud to be part of Rhode Island student-athlete awards each year. Supporting students who have demonstrated academic, athletic, and school involvement is critically important today,” said Bill Finnegan, owner of The Finetco Family of Lumberyards. “Our family went through public schools, participated in sports, and participated in many school activities and we’re proud of the adults they’ve turned into. In this day and age, lessening any burden to help students who understand the importance of commitment and hard work is very important to The Finetco Family of Lumberyards as well as the Finnegan family. We look forward to this award each year and learning about the recipients’ accomplishments.”

Alves, who graduated from Cranston West with a 4.25 GPA, was the girl recipient. Alves is a five-sport varsity athlete with all-state honors in four of them. She will be attending Quinnipiac University to study business and will play Division I soccer. Serra, who graduated from Westerly High School with high honors, received the boy scholarship. He has received all-state honors in both outdoor track and cross-country and is now committed to running indoor and outdoor track and field for Clemson University, where he also plans to study pre-med.

Wednesday’s ceremony took place at Coventry Lumber’s Nooseneck Hill Road location and was attended by representatives from The Finetco Family of Lumberyards and the Finnegan family; Coventry Athletic Director Chuck Jones; as well as the recipients and their friends & family.
